The goal in publishing is twofold: normalize failure - *hellllooooo you gotta fail to succeed*, but this is still SO hard for many of us - and share the learnings I acquired on building community-based businesses, given this is or will be central to many curent or future businesses.
I think I now can more clearly articulate the antidote to FOMO - it is our relationship with ourself. It is our trust that whatever it is that we are choosing to do INSTEAD is the right answer for us, because we know and trust ourselves to the degree that no amount of FOMO would sway us from acting in our best interest (if we choose to check in and really see what that is).
The “fear of missing out”, otherwise known as FOMO, started trending around 2004, when social media really started to take off and we gained a window into the lives (or at least the highly edited, curated lives) of friends, family members and far-off acquaintances.
All you need a personal brand to do is to leave an impression on your audience, so that when they return to a subject, conversation, or opportunity that you may have a place in, they will REMEMBER you and be able to reach out.
Your personal brand IS a story, and an exciting one at that.
The “professional development” world, and musty career services conference room where you first heard the words “personal brand”, did us a disservice when they put personal brand onto a bullet pointed powerpoint.
It’s taken me the better part of the last four years to find the right balance between having confidence in my knowledge and ability to add value as a leader, coach and consultant, and recognizing that there is so much that I DON’T know, and being a perpetual student is much closer to my reality (and frankly, all of our realities).
