The FOMO Antidote
This past week I raised this question on my Instagram story, "Do you actively cultivate a relationship with yourself?"
I received a LOT of responses, and here is the outcome:
Two-thirds of people said that they did NOT consciously cultivate a relationship with themselves.
One-third of people said that they DID consciously cultivate a relationship with themselves.
And then, because I am ALWAYS curious to learn more, I followed up with a question.. what positive benefits do you see from investing in this relationship?
What my community responded with landed SO SOLIDLY for me, I had to share the responses here
Here is what they said...
Having a relationship with myself positively impacts my life by:
Helping me to find the courage I need to go after my goals..
Allowing me to pursue the things I want without worrying if others will join..
Putting things in perspective so I can have a sense of peace and ease.
Wow. These insights just blew me away, and it shed light on something I think we have all experienced. In moments where we potentially get pushed off track, collapsed or ruffled.. what keeps us ON TRACK, strong in our conviction and moving forward with confidence and ease, is our relationship with ourself. This is, at the end of the day, the one relationship that we play both parts in. We are both the speaker and the listener, the giver and the receiver, the student and the teacher.
This little survey also reminded me of the post I wrote about FOMO at the beginning of the month... and the reason why we so often are influenced by this "fear of missing out".
I think I now can more clearly articulate the antidote to FOMO - it is our relationship with ourself. It is our trust that whatever it is that we are choosing to do INSTEAD is the right answer for us, because we know and trust ourselves to the degree that no amount of FOMO would sway us from acting in our best interest (if we choose to check in and really see what that is).
I was so inspired by these reflections, that I put together a little set of journaling prompts that can help you, me, anyone, go deeper into our relationship with ourselves. They will illuminate the areas that your self is calling for more attention and care, and give you a path forward for "abandoning" yourself less.. and experiencing more of what my community members shared, confidence, ease, peace and a life filled with the things WE uniquely want to pursue.
Have a beautiful week, and never forget that the time you invest in yourself ripples out into every aspect of your life, from your work to your relationships to your health and happiness.
YOU are worth it!
